Data Recovery Tip of the Month

Data Recovery is a difficult and often inexact science that can quickly become an impossibility if care is not taken. Here are some simple precautions to take before you attempt any DIY data recovery:

1. Attempt to get your most important data first; The drive could stop working at any time

2. Place the drive in a separate computer to perform any repairs

3. Use a program like Acronis TrueImage to make an exact copy of the drive before you make any changes to the drive.

4. Never install recovery software on the drive to be recovered

5. Never attempt recovery of files that you must have. Contact a data recovery professional first.

Our number one tip: Stop using the drive

Call a professional first.

Other tips for DIY recovery are found on this site, however, if you must have your data back, you should stop using the drive and call a data recovery specialist. Do it yourself methods, many of which we will outline for you here, may work. However, we do not take responsibility for your use of them as they can also be used to completely destroy any chance of recovery.

Evaluate your situation.

We understand that data recovery sometimes costs more than the data is worth, in those cases doing it yourself may be the only viable course of action. If you can say to yourself, "If I don't get my data back it will not be a devastating loss", then feel free to use the tips and tools we provide to attempt recovery. If, however, your data is irreplaceable and must be retrieved then please call for help.
